A general opinion is that a persuasive essay and argumentative essay is one and the same thing. However, some argue that the argumentative essay has a stronger tone than the persuasive one. They advocate that the argumentative essay is targeting more resistant readers while the persuasive essay inclines to accept its point of view; the argumentative essay strongly implies and advises you to accept the proposal, not even the thesis, claimed in it.
First, find a reasonable and well debatable thesis. In order to make a good argumentative essay you should prepare well. Research a couple of topics for thesis; think about your audience and their reaction. A good argumentative essay must have at least two conflicting points; in order to achieve that, you have to research the topic well and prepare for it. The arguments should be logical, convincing and well laid out in your argumentative essay in order to make it a good one.
The argumentative essay of course starts with an introduction. In the introduction you have to state your point, provide a brief explanation on it as well as background information. Your statement is your thesis and your thesis statement is actually your main argument. A well advocated thesis is a good argumentative essay so once again research and pick your thesis extremely carefully. A strong and clear thesis reaches the readers immediately.
A thesis statement can be simple and clearly stated like, for example:
“Speaking a second language is an advantage because it makes people more competitive, educated, tolerable, well-mannered and smarter than those who speak only their native language”.
That means you have researched and brainstormed on the topic of learning a second language and you have decided to write an argumentative essay defending that point of view.
In the body of the argumentative essay you start by stating your arguments. The tricky part in the argumentative essay is that you have to pick an objection of the topic, but the objection has to prove your thesis again. That is the essence of writing a good argumentative essay using an objection that actually proves your subject.
For example, when it comes to studying a second language you can pick up an argument that it is time and money consuming but you can easily oppose that knowing a second language will give you a higher salary and better position; therefore, that expense is reasonable. You can even write down that in the period while you are studying the second language you will not have time to spend money on entertainment, which is also expensive. It is not a question of being cheap on your education as well as professional and personal realization. Expenses are expenses; you will have them no matter what you do; so, spend your money them wisely. See, that is an example how an objection can actually defend your point of view in an argumentative essay.
A good argumentative essay must have at least three arguments and two conflicting points. One of them must be the main argument, after that you can give objections and defend it and finally, continue with your arguments. Be careful with picking an objection; do not choose an easy objection to argue about because it will not make your essay convincing and argumentative, therefore it will not be a good argumentative essay.
Logical structure and arguments in the body of your essay are essential in writing a good argumentative essay that defends your clearly stated thesis in the introduction.
As with every other type of essay you are writing, finish the argumentative one with a conclusion. The conclusion must be strong, convincing and advocating your thesis once again based on everything written so far in the essay. At the end, proofread your essay, check for grammar and spelling mistakes, make sure it is written in a logical and organized manner with the proper transitions.
